Description

Key West, Florida, is the best-known among Florida's Lower Keys, which officially start once you cross the Seven-Mile Bridge, just south of Marathon, Florida. This Lower Florida Keys vacation begins at Bahia Honda State Park, a natural sand beach that's a favorite with locals. Continue your drive west on the Overseas Highway to Big Pine Key and National Key Deer Refuge, home to the diminutive deer found only here. Your journey continues west until you reach quirky, laid-back Key West. Check out the Ernest Hemingway Home & Museum and the Mel Fisher Maritime Museum, which showcases gold and other treasures from shipwrecks long ago. Key West's Old Town is centered around funky Duval Street, which is packed with restaurants, galleries, and shops. Each night at the end of Duval Street, Sunset Celebration takes place as the sun drops below the horizon. Be sure to check out the two local specialties: conch fritters and key lime pie.
