The Thousand Islands are actually 1,793 islands located on the majestic St. Lawrence River between the U.S. and Canada. While many of them remain uninhabited, most of the islands feature summer homes -- rustic cottages, magnificent mansions, even castles. The quaint towns of Clayton and Alexandria Bay perch on the New York side of the river and are good starting points for exploring these islands. These waterfront communities come alive in the summertime with world-class fishing, boating, golf, and sightseeing by boat, helicopter, and even hot air balloon. Make your home base the historic Thousand Islands Inn, home of the famous Thousand Island salad dressing. Because winter weather in upstate New York can be severe, this tour is best explored in summertime, when most of the resorts are open.
