What is it about a lighthouse? Are they the brooding, romantic, and pensive places the imagination wants them to be? That they were once homes for lighthouse keepers and their families adds to their mystique. The lonely sentinel contemplating fresh water expanses is one of Michigan's most familiar sights. Over a hundred mark the state's vast shoreline -- a shoreline longer than the Atlantic seacoast of the United States. Many can be visited by the public. Many stand where ships have foundered and been lost on treacherous shoals. Traveling along the shore of Lake Huron on Michigan's east coast, you'll encounter about a dozen lighthouses. Some are still working and some decommissioned; some can be visited and some are simply to be considered for the life and the mystery they represent.
