Description

Rapid City, SD hosts both Mount Rushmore and the Crazy Horse Memorial, two must-see national landmarks. The town is as beautiful as it is patriotic, surrounded by the Black Hills, and is the home of Ellsworth AFB.

For a combination of history and beauty take in the scenery on Skyline Drive and visit the Berlin Wall exhibit, the Chapel in the Hills, the Badlands, and bronze statues of all of America’s presidents.

Visitors should take advantage of Downtown Rapid City. In addition to shopping and dining, the area is the Black Hills’ hub for local and regional art. Museums, numerous galleries, and a historic theatre are all located within a few blocks of each other downtown.

Traveler Reviews

Wonderful place to live and retire, nestled in the hills.

Rapid City is one of my favorite places to go. It's neatly tucked in to the foothills that lead to the mountains that the Lakota tribe call the Paha Sapa (Black Hills). The city itself has a variety of interesting hillsides, which is very enjoyable to me, growing up as I did in flat-as-a-pancake Oklahoma. There's a lot to see in the Rapid City area, from Mount Rushmore and the Crazy Horse Memorial to Harney Peak and tourist attractions such as Reptile Gardens, the Journey Museum and the Cosmos Mystery Area. The bronze statues that stand on almost every street corner in the downtown area are interesting as well.

My husband and I lived here for 4 years and loved everything about it! Rapid City is small enough that you don't feel consumed by city life, yet large enough to have everything you need including TONS of outdoor activities. We had to move for my husband job, but are moving back to raise our family here.

Rapid City is small enough for that "home-town" feel but so much to do in the area...I have lived here most of my adult life and consider it home~ The area is rich in culture and beauty~
