A quaint small town, with amenities of a larger town. The city is located within the Tygart Valley surrounded by stunning mountain views. Tourism is a big draw to the area with many visitors to West Virginia's natural wonders traveling through the area and staying in the town. Downtown Elkins itself is a cultural tourism draw with an active downtown association with many various shops ranging from salons, gift shops, clothing stores, cafes, and coffee houses. Several theaters are located in the downtown Elkins area as well as several restaurants and pubs. Elkins is committed to its historical beginnings and has revitalized many of the historic buildings including the railroad depot where trains depart to take tourists into the scenic and pristine mountains. There is never a shortage of festivals to take part of. The Mountain State Forest Festival which takes place the first week of October is the largest in the state drawing over 100,000 visitors. There is also the Augusta heritage festival and Ramp Festival. Several historic districts dot the city, with the Weese Historic district located behind the county court house being the best known. The campus of Davis and Elkins College also provides an image into a prosperous Senator and Vice Presidential candidates life and how the family spent their summers in the area.
