Description

Mandan takes their slogan, “Where the West Begins,” very seriously. The town started out as the village of the Mandan tribe and hosted Lewis & Clark on their journey. See the keelboat the explorers crossed the Missouri River with, Fort Yates and Double Ditch Indian Village where they passed through, and the Lewis & Clark Interpretive Center.

If it is patriotism you are looking for, be sure to visit the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, which is dedicated to those who have served our country in every branch of the military. The cemetery is located in Fort Abraham Lincoln State Park, where you can also find a reconstructed version of the former Fort Abraham Lincoln, the Custer House, and the reconstructed On-a-Slant Village for a look back into the Mandan tribe that once inhabited this land.

Visitors can also explore a zoo, art depot, and Native American reservations and landmarks. Mandan offers plenty of dining and shopping and outdoor recreation from camping, hunting and fishing to winter sports and a waterpark. Take advantage of golfing, kayaking, sledding, skiing or snowboarding.

With several community events each year, the most unique is Mandan Rodeo Days every 4th of July, voted the “Best Community Celebration.” Enjoy broncos, art, fireworks and the state’s longest parade. Find out more about where the West begins in Mandan’s reviews.

I HAVE LIVED IN MANDAN MY WHOLE LIFE, IT IS THE MOST PATRIOTIC TOWN, WE CELEBRATE WITH THE LARGEST PARADE, WHICH I HAVE BEEN IN RIDING HORSES HAVING A GREAT TIME, THEN TO THE RODEO FOR THE 4 DAYS JULY 1-4, EVERYONE HAVING BARBEQUES AND GETTING TOGETHER, MANDAN IS THE BEST, I SHOULD KNOW I HAVE LIVED HERE FOR 55 YEARS IN SEPTEMBER AND I WOULD NEVER LIVE ANYWHERE ELSE. I LOVE MANDAN NORTH DAKOTA

Mandan shows a pride in celebrating Independence Day that is above and beyond what most communities do. From Kaleidoscope to baseball games, Art in the Park to community picnics, USA's oldest Rodeo to the regions largest Independence Day Parade and Street Festival, Mandan has something for everyone. What sets Mandan apart are the everyday remembrances of being part of this great nation. The Liberty Memorial bridge that spans the Missouri River on the east. The US Flags that pepper yards and businesses all year long. The many events that take place at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery in remembrance of those who served our country. The interpretive sites at Fort Lincoln and along the Old Red Old Ten Scenic Byway. The Lewis and Clark trail running North and South. The people of Mandan take pride in their community, their state and their country.

Moved to Mandan 2 yrs ago from South Dakota. For a small town, we could not believe that the 4th of July is celebrated all week and the fireworks displays are unreal. You can light fireworks from your own yard and the whole town is light up to the early morning hours. The Bismarck residents come across the river to celebrate in Mandan because they could never come close to the celebrations.
