Emporia, Kansas

2013 Best Small Towns in America

Contest ends:  September 3, 2013

1 Votes - "Most Patriotic"

Emporia, KS prides itself in founding Veterans Day, which they celebrate with a full week of festivities. Locals support the troops and celebrate America with events and fundraisers year round. Emporia is located between Kansas City and Wichita on Interstate 35.

Tour the All Veterans Memorial and Park, which honors all who have served our country in every branch of the military. The town also offers other memorials, the Lyon County Museum, the Schmidt Museum of Natural History, and the David Traylor Zoo. An aquatic center and 18 parks in Emporia will please the active traveler.

Emporia State University draws students from far and wide and provides a museum of its own and competitive athletics. Emporia’s also home to the National Teacher’s Hall of Fame and the William Allen White residence, a favorite place for visitors to stay.

Food is a highlight here, with many restaurants where the people are friendly and the owners are often hands-on, doing everything from bussing tables to manning the grill. Try the enchiladas at Casa Ramos, the giant sandwiches at Amanda’s Bakery and Café, the juicy and cheap burgers at J’s Burgers, or the mouthwatering ribs at Bobby D’s BBQ.

Shoe repairman Al King and U.S. Sen. Ed Rees worked together to have Congress declare Emporia as the Founding City of Veterans' Day. The effort grew from King's desire to honor all veterans by having an existing holiday, Armistice Day, changed to Veterans' Day. King and his wife had no children but had reared her nephew, John Cooper. King pushed for recognition for all veterans after Cooper died in World War II. The city celebrates with a week of activities in tribute to military service men and women. The city itself holds its own little gems, from a totally refurbished theatre to a free zoo. Emporia's a friendly, caring community that's great to call home; it's close enough to Kansas City to enjoy big-city activities, then return to a less-hurried pace.

Besides Emporia being a great place to shop, eat and visit, it has many plusses! It is the founder of Veteran's day. It has an all veterans memorial that is beautifully maintained. Most of all its patriotism is shown with many well attended parades, and various celebrations. The VFW, American Legion are active and well attended. Emporia gets my vote for the "most Patriotic"

Emporia, Kansas is my home town and I am proud to live here!!! I was born and raised here but left for a short time to go to college. I was the one who said I would never move back but after a few years away I missed it. We have the friendliest people that always come together to help support each other. Veterans Day is a huge celebration here in Emporia!!! We have many events the week before leading up to and all day the day of Veterans Day. Approved by Congress in 2003, Emporia is the official founding city of Veterans Day. In 1991, Emporia became the first city in the United States to establish an All Veterans Memorial Park dedicated to all veterans of all wars, conflicts and peacetime service. Emporia, Kansas is the MOST PATRIOTIC!!!!
