Nauvoo could easily win in any of these categories. But in addition to the history and free stuff to do, Nauvoo has great food. If you arrive in Nauvoo around lunch time, you will want to stop at the Nauvoo Mill and Bakery for a great sandwich on homemade bread (they have several varieties--my favorite is the sourdough). After you eat your sandwich, pick up a bag of their homemade sorghum cookies--melt in your mouth deliciousness. You can also pick up a loaf of your favorite bread to take home. As you tour the numerous historical sites around town (most tours are free) your bound to get thirsty, stop by the Red Brick Store for a bottle of their private label root beer, or if your hankering for something more, stop at Grandpa Johns for a tasty malt or a drink from their old fashioned soda fountain. When dinner time hits, head straight to the Hotel Nauvoo and feast on their buffet-par excellence! This is not the largest buffet you ever seen, but the quality of the food is amazing! The buffet has a choice of six different meats--carved ham, turkey, roast beef, fried catfish, fried chicken, and one additional meat that changes every day, an assortment of salads and vegetables and phenomenal cinnamon rolls that melt in your mouth. After dinner stop by Baxter's Vineyard for wine (or grape juice) by the glass or bottle. Baxter's Vineyard is the oldest winery in the state of Illinois and they have a variety of wines that will satisfy any taste. Nauvoo is a culinary tour-de-force and a must-stop for any comfort food aficionado.
